Lizards are ectotherm animals covered with scales. Most lizards have pentadactyl limbs. Lizards are among one of the most diverse faunas in the world. They occupy almost all kinds of ecological niches (from underground to above ground) from tropical rain forests to arid deserts (even on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau at an altitude of 5000+m). 蜥蜴亚目动物统称为蜥蜴类。蜥蜴共有外形特征：大部分有发达的四肢（部分物种四肢退化，甚至四肢退化）；有外耳道和鼓膜；通体被覆瓦状或平砌的角质鳞片；有可以活动的眼睑（壁虎眼睑愈合成透明膜）等。

当前，我国共有蜥蜴类物种243种（2022-05-07），隶属于10个科：双足蜥科、脆蛇蜥科、球趾虎科、睑虎科、壁虎科、鬣蜥科、蜥蜴科、石龙子科、巨蜥科、鳄蜥科。
